Cottage Mezzanine | Cholmeley | Architects in Highgate

Blue Steel Cottage Mezzanine added to a cottage in Highgate, North West London

An under-utilised small cottage in our client’s garden had great potential. We took on the task of enlivening the cottage interior to create simple yet bold stand-alone accommodation for the client’s in-laws. With the addition of a new mezzanine floor, we were able to double the floor area of the cottage, allowing us to create a flexible and multifunctional space.

The newly added mezzanine floor provides added space and versatility to the cottage. When not being used by guests, it can be used as a study area for the client’s daughters. In the evening, the mezzanine can serve as a party venue or a place for everyone to watch a movie. This added flexibility provides the client with the opportunity to use the cottage space in a variety of ways, ensuring that it is fully utilised at all times.

To further enhance the flexibility of the space, we incorporated clever joinery to conceal the beds when they are not in use. This not only maximizes the available space but also ensures that the cottage remains functional and clutter-free, creating a sense of calm and order that is essential in any home.

Overall, the new mezzanine is a stunning example of how clever design and careful planning can transform an under-utilised space into a flexible and multifunctional area. With its bold yet simple interior, clever joinery, and versatile mezzanine floor, the cottage is now an ideal space for guests, as well as a perfect study or entertainment area for the client’s family. The end result is a space that is not only functional but also beautiful, reflecting the client’s style and personality

Loft Office Refurbishment | Peartree | Architects in Clerkenwell

A loft office refurbishment with fine exposed timber joists and original brightly painted steel columns is revealed in the refurbishment of a tired office in Clerkenwell.

The refurbishment of a tired office in Clerkenwell has revealed a classic loft office with fine exposed timber joists and original brightly painted steel columns. Behind the double-height brickwork arches of a fine Victorian facade of a North London office building, a loft office was hidden, which had been subdivided many times over the years, losing its original character.

The loft office refurbishment was stripped back to its original structure, exposing intact timber floors and capped steel columns. The original paint colours were revealed, creating a unique and vibrant aesthetic. The office partitions were removed to provide an open-plan office configuration on raised access floors, while the plasterboard was removed to expose yellow brickwork.

The rear courtyard, which was previously unused, now provides a new circulation stairwell and a lift to each new floor, including a new mezzanine on the top floor. This addition enhances the functionality of the office space while preserving its classic loft character.

Overall, the loft office refurbishment serves as an excellent example of how classic loft spaces can be reimagined and restored to their original grandeur. By stripping away layers of previous renovations, the design team was able to create a unique and vibrant space that celebrates the building’s history and character. The result is a flexible and functional open-plan office that is perfect for modern business needs, while retaining its classic loft charm.

Copper Roof Conversion | Winston | Architects in Hackney

A copper roof conversion to a mid-terraced Victorian house provides a unique view of the stars.

The traditional London ‘butterfly’ roof has been converted to provide a copper roof conversion to the top of the house. forresterarchitects were given a free rein in the design proposal. The client was keen to avoid the default mid-terraced dormer extension.

The key design feature, a large oval glazed roof-light, animates the interior of the new master bedroom. It acts like a sundial effect as the sun passes overhead. The roof-light is electrically operated from the king-size bed and in the evening offers unrestricted views of the sky at night. Should the weather take a change for the worse the glazed roof-light closes over. The roof conversion is clad in a natural copper cladding. The copper cladding will change from orange to green in the same manner as the roofs of the traditional roof architecture of London.

A cool white interior is complimented with flashes of colour expressed in the feature wall. The wall separates the master bedroom from the shower-room. Two enlarged clerestory windows provide increased day lighting to the bathroom. A twin-shower is set against a glass mosaic tiled wall, which provides a key feature to the new master suite. A crisp white resin floor, which provides seamless continuity between the bathroom and master bedroomAn east-facing terrace offers uninterrupted views across the city and an early morning sunrise for a modern roof conversion.
